Summary

I enjoyed this, I listened to the audiobook and him narrating brought me back to when I was a kid listening to some of his nature docs with my dad。 If you can't read this book, then listen。 If you can't listen, then watch the documentary which covers the book。 I enjoyed this, I listened to the audiobook and him narrating brought me back to when I was a kid listening to some of his nature docs with my dad。 If you can't read this book, then listen。 If you can't listen, then watch the documentary which covers the book。 。。。more

The first half of this book was captivating; I especially liked reading about his early career and "witness statement" about the status of nature。 The second half started to feel a bit。。。 Like imagining a utopia world? But it was still interesting to think about, at least。 And who knows, maybe we'll be able to make some of the technological and social shifts that he talks about。 The first half of this book was captivating; I especially liked reading about his early career and "witness statement" about the status of nature。 The second half started to feel a bit。。。 Like imagining a utopia world? Tricky to rate。 This was obviously very good, really no complaints。 But the fact that it won the Science Goodreads Choice set me up to think this would be great in some way。 *shrug* It was good, not amazing, would recommend, but if you skip it you're not missing anything revolutionary。 Goodreads Choice winner 2020 Tricky to rate。 This was obviously very good, really no complaints。 But the fact that it won the Science Goodreads Choice set me up to think this would be great in some way。 *shrug* It was good, not amazing, would recommend, but if you skip it you're not missing anything revolutionary。 Goodreads Choice winner 2020 。。。more

I believe this is a book everyone should read。 Sir Attenborough lays out in very plain terms the changes in our world that have happened in his "extraordinary life" and how those changes threaten life on the earth as we know it。 The overall threat as he sees it is the loss of biodiversity on earth。 He goes on to document the many causes of this loss from climate change to habitat loss to over fishing。 He also gives very hopeful examples of how we can reverse the damage that has been done that co I believe this is a book everyone should read。 Sir Attenborough lays out in very plain terms the changes in our world that have happened in his "extraordinary life" and how those changes threaten life on the earth as we know it。 The overall threat as he sees it is the loss of biodiversity on earth。 He goes on to document the many causes of this loss from climate change to habitat loss to over fishing。 He also gives very hopeful examples of how we can reverse the damage that has been done that could lead to an increase in biodiversity and a more sustainable world。 He begins each chapter with the population, carbon in the atmosphere and how much remaining wilderness for various years of his life。 I found these statistics most eye opening。 In 1937 the world population was 2。3 billion, carbon was 280 PPM and there was 66% remaining wilderness。 In 2020 the population is 7。8 billion, Carbon is 415 ppm and there is only 35% remaining wilderness。 。。。more

Not a fan of green cities, indoor farms, artificial meats and all the other high-tech approaches to solving these problems but he does cover a lot of real solutions as well。 He also gives an explicit criticism of infinite growth, even showing skepticism for "green growth。" That alone makes this smarter than 99% of the other shit being published these days。 And since I've listened to him narrate so many nature documentaries I was able to read this entirely in his voice, which I found quite charmi Not a fan of green cities, indoor farms, artificial meats and all the other high-tech approaches to solving these problems but he does cover a lot of real solutions as well。 He also gives an explicit criticism of infinite growth, even showing skepticism for "green growth。" That alone makes this smarter than 99% of the other shit being published these days。 And since I've listened to him narrate so many nature documentaries I was able to read this entirely in his voice, which I found quite charming。 。。。more

I would give this incredible book more than 5 stars。David Attenborough writes an eloquent plea for the human race to save itself and the planet from imploding which is the path we are currently on。 He cites credible ways in which we can achieve this if we all work together globally to reduce waste and the destruction of the seas and wildlife on land。 I don’t think there can be many people who are unaware of our need to reduce waste and allow wildlife to regrow and nurture。 It is going to take ev I would give this incredible book more than 5 stars。David Attenborough writes an eloquent plea for the human race to save itself and the planet from imploding which is the path we are currently on。 He cites credible ways in which we can achieve this if we all work together globally to reduce waste and the destruction of the seas and wildlife on land。 I don’t think there can be many people who are unaware of our need to reduce waste and allow wildlife to regrow and nurture。 It is going to take every individual person to play their part large or small in achieving this。 。。。more

How this book was put together really worked well to show the severity and urgency around climate change。

Eye-opening and startling, yet interspersed with hope and optimism for our CAPACITY for change and sustainability being more than a marketing buzzword。 Attenborough's testimony was incredibly moving - the world is going to be so much poorer when he is finally gone。 This is a must read for everybody IMO。 Eye-opening and startling, yet interspersed with hope and optimism for our CAPACITY for change and sustainability being more than a marketing buzzword。 Attenborough's testimony was incredibly moving - the world is going to be so much poorer when he is finally gone。 This is a must read for everybody IMO。 。。。more

A great reminder of the important things that we tend to forget in the blur of our busy lives。 “Give and take, that is the essence of what balance is all about。”I had recently watched the documentary Seaspiracy and the series Snowpiercer, so you can say this book came into my life at a fairly suitable time。 As I was reading this, I felt like I was being transported back to my geography and biology classes in high school - only wishing that I had paid more attention to the critical lessons taught A great reminder of the important things that we tend to forget in the blur of our busy lives。 “Give and take, that is the essence of what balance is all about。”I had recently watched the documentary Seaspiracy and the series Snowpiercer, so you can say this book came into my life at a fairly suitable time。 As I was reading this, I felt like I was being transported back to my geography and biology classes in high school - only wishing that I had paid more attention to the critical lessons taught back then。 None of the content was particularly new but it was powerfully framed in the context of a 94 year old explorer who had seen the environmental changes up close and personal over his life。People often talk about sustainability, climate change and ESG, and there’s truly a strong reason for this。 If governments, businesses and policy makers don’t address the issue at hand, there won’t be anything at all to even address (plot twist: there’s no earth!?)。 I’m glad there is more awareness。 I look forward to making baby step changes going forward。 Starting with Green Monday tomorrow! 。。。more

Very entertaining。 Easy read。 Eye opening。 A good summary and a call to protect the planet。 I would have liked guidelines of resources to make personal life more sustainable。

Fantastic statement from Attenborough of the damage to our Planet and his vision for correcting it。 Loses 2 stars because it could have included so much more depth! I felt that the book was only just getting started。 Very easy and enjoyable read, however。

This is a seminal work from David Attenborough and should be read by everyone。 The entire human population needs to work together to have a future and this book lays out where we are now and what the future will be depending on how we all respond。 I was a rollercoaster but,on completion, leaves me with a sense of hope。

Äänikirjan lukijana tuttu luontodokumenttien miellyttävä ääni Jarmo Heikkinen。 Aihe äärettömän tärkeä, mutta periaatteessa kaikki jo tiedossa, miten tieto tavoittaisi ne maailman päättäjät, joiden panosta tarvitaan? Ahdistavaa ajoittain, pientä toivonpilkahdusta lopussa。 Yritän tehdä parhaani, jotta kaunis, upea maapallomme jäisi tuleville sukupolville edes hiukan parempana。

I enjoyed this book。It was fairly basic, but I still learned lots。 Great read that I recommend for any environment-interested readers。 Surprised this won the Goodreads award over some of the other books I enjoyed last year, but still a great read。🌍🌎🌏3。1/5

This book affected me greatly - more than any other。 It is a hard read - the information is clear and shocking but real。 But it is an important read - keep going - the first half is tough but the second offers much hope and positive messages。

Sir David Attenborough has spent nearly 70 years teaching us about the natural world。 At 94, his job isn't finished。 In this incredible book published last year, he describes the swiftly declining state of our planet over the last 85 years, the disastrous path in which it is headed if we refuse to change our ways, and how we can drastically improve not just the environment, but ensure our own survival if we choose to rethink our priorities。 At 221 pages, this is a shorter read, but the informati Sir David Attenborough has spent nearly 70 years teaching us about the natural world。 At 94, his job isn't finished。 In this incredible book published last year, he describes the swiftly declining state of our planet over the last 85 years, the disastrous path in which it is headed if we refuse to change our ways, and how we can drastically improve not just the environment, but ensure our own survival if we choose to rethink our priorities。 At 221 pages, this is a shorter read, but the information contained in this book couldn't be more important。 Attenborough ends on a hopeful note, "Everything is set for us to win。 We have a plan。 We know what to do。 There is a path to sustainability。 It is a path that could lead to a better future for all life on Earth。 We must let our politicians and business leaders know that we understand this, that the vision for the future is not just something we need, it is something, above all, that we want。" If you think the destruction of our natural world is far in the future, if you think our impact on the Earth couldn't possibly be big enough to influence it in drastic ways, if you think there's nothing that can be done, Sir David Attenborough will set you straight。 I don't know of another person who has had a front-row seat to the changes that have occurred in nature worldwide over the past 7 decades。 It seems to me we should be listening to what he has to say。 。。。more
